Empathy in Psychotherapy : Good Uses and Misuses

Abstract
Empathy is a process for understanding an individual¡¯s subjective experience by vicariously sharing that experience while maintaining an observant stance. Empathy is an essential prerequisite for the practice of psychotherapy. In psychoanalysis, it is thought to enhance the development of the therapeutic alliance. From self psychological perspective, it is fundamental to the emergence of selfobject transferences, which is essential for the curative force, and to strengthen the sense of tile self. But there are many controversies and confusion about the concept of empathy and its therapeutic value. The author reviewed and discussed the definition, mechanism, and good and misuses of empathy.
